London Fashion Week is often regarded as the most eccentric of the ‘Big Four’ fashion weeks, yet for Spring/Summer 2012 many labels married a commercial sensibility with edgy but playful designs. It looks like next season will be big on colour, patterns and print.
We reviewed the shows and here’s our pick on the hottest looks from the six days, selected based on what we want to have in our own wardrobes!
Julien Macdonald
The king of the sexy cocktail dress returned with his take on Givenchy-inspired fringing. Julien Macdonald‘s shimmering gowns, detailed with swinging metallic tassels and intricate beading, had luxe glamour in spades!
Antonio Berandi
Berandi continues to make the most of his fiery Italian roots with a series of vampy dresses that had instant red carpet appeal. Themed around ‘the woman as a warrior,’ we loved his cut-out bodycon dresses (perfect for Gaga) and the seductive sophistication of this scarlet show-stopping gown.
Clements Ribeiro
The design team of Suzanne Clements and Inacio Ribeiro proved to be masters of mismatched patterns, digital prints and dreamy colour-blocking. The combination of surreal graphics with romantic colours and lady-like elegance is a definite winner in our books.
Marios Schwab
Schwab’s success lies in his contrast between the tough and edgy with the seductive and sensual. His trademark sexy corsetry was much in evidence, yet softened with floaty fabrics and netting.
Issa
Designer Daniella Issa Helayel, originally from Brazil, brought plenty of tropical prints, bright colours and feminine shapes to London. We loved this collection for its flattering instant wearability (the Duchess of Cambridge is a noted fan) and the pretty lace dresses are certain to be high on many shopping lists next season.
Temperley London
Alice Temperley moved away from her typical sequins and florals with a resort chic look, complete with a touch of old-school Hollywood Riviera glamour. The best outfits had a natural easy grace to them, thanks to slouchy cuts and fluid fabrics.
Roksanda Ilincic
Ilincic has been a long-time industry favourite but this week saw her edging ever closer to the mainstream. Her clever draping, playful use of volume and elegant essentials made for a chic and stylish dress collection.
John Rocha
Rocha had one of the most evocative shows of the six days, with a collection themed around ‘Celtic Twilight.’ A combination of the ethereal and the gloomy, these structured gowns were works of art – the uncombed silk tassels that made up many of the skirts reminded us of icing piped onto a cake!
